After breakfast at the lodge, we drive to Atalaya, the main river port of the region. Here, we switch from road transport to a motorized boat and begin navigating downriver into the Amazon lowlands. Along the way, there may be time for optional river swimming, depending on conditions.
We arrive at our second jungle lodge, located close to the river, and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, we visit Machuwasi Lagoon, an excellent area for birdwatching, including the hoatzin, often referred to as the “prehistoric bird,” along with many other species. After dinner, we take a guided night walk to explore the jungle after dark, searching for insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal wildlife.
