Detailed Program
01
Day 1: Cusco to Wayquecha Biological Station Adventure
Setting off from Cusco, we commence our trek towards the enchanting Manu Jungle. As dawn breaks around 4:30 am, our private vehicle will collect you from your Cusco accommodations. The journey unfolds amidst breathtaking sceneries, where the Andes transition into the Amazon basin. Our inaugural stop, Huacarpay, boasts a rich avian diversity including the endemic Bearded Mountaineer and Rusty-fronted Canastero. We later search for the unique Creamy-crested Spinetail, progressing to the picturesque Andean pass – Acjanacu. By dusk, we delve into birdwatching along the eastern Andean slopes, anticipating encounters with Mountain Tanagers and Gray-breasted Mountain Toucans. Our restful night awaits at Wayquecha Biological Station.

Day 2: Day-long Birdwatching at Wayquecha
The morning’s first light brings a plethora of bird songs, setting the stage for a full day of birdwatching. As we traverse from the 2800m station to the 1300m elevation, we’ll be on the lookout for birds like the White-rumped Hawk and the vibrant hummingbirds like Collared Inca. As night falls, we’ll retreat to Wayquecha Biological Station.

Day 3: Wayquecha to Cock of the Rock Lodge Bird Expedition
Post breakfast, we embark on a comprehensive birdwatching day, exploring species like the Bar-bellied Woodpecker and Golden-Crowned Flycatchers. By afternoon, the Cock of the Rock Lodge beckons. The evening promises sightings of hummingbirds such as the Wire-Crested Thorntail. The nocturnal owls might also grace us with their presence. The day concludes at Cock of the Rock Lodge.

Day 4: Discovering Cock of the Rock Lodge
Nestled amidst the unspoiled Manu mountain cloud forest, the lodge offers unparalleled opportunities to observe vibrant birds, particularly the Rupicola Peruviana. Behind the lodge, a trail unveils lesser-seen species and a variety of orchids. The day is filled with sightings of birds like the Amazonian Umbrellabird and Peruvian Piedtail. Nightfall finds us back at Cock of the Rock Lodge.

Day 5: Journey to Manu Wild Ecological Reserve
The family-operated lodge, situated near the Manu National Park’s buffer zone, promises a rich bird species list. The habitats vary from bamboo groves to floodplains, presenting a diverse avian population. By evening, we’ll reside in the Manu Wild Lodge.

Day 6: Complete Birdwatching at Manu Wild Ecological Reserve
Today’s mission includes spotting the Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Manu Antbird, and Bamboo Antshrike, among others. Nighttime might also reward us with owl sightings and glimpses of Tapirs, Peccaries, and perhaps even Jaguars. The day concludes at Manu Wild Lodge.

Day 7: Voyage to Blanquillo Reserve (Macaw Clay Lick)
Starting with morning birdwatching at Manu Wild Lodge, we later sail towards Tambo Blanquillo Lodge, spotting riverside birds and prey. The river ride transitions from Andean foothills to the vast Amazon basin. We retire for the night at Tambo Blanquillo Lodge.

Day 8: Blanquillo Reserve Exploration
A stone’s throw from Blanquillo Lodge, the Macaw Clay Lick offers a mesmerizing view of parrots and macaws. Throughout the day, the extensive trails reveal diverse bird species. An optional night excursion might lead us to the Amazonian Pygmy Owl or the Ocellated Poorwill. The night rests at Tambo Blanquillo Lodge.

Day 9: Departure to Puerto Maldonado
After an early morning birdwatching session, we embark on our boat for the final journey towards Puerto Maldonado. The trip along the Madre de Dios River encapsulates the essence of our adventure, with forests stretching as far as the eye can see.

Manu is one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth, but wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. They depend on weather, season, and natural animal behavior. Our guides maximize opportunities through experience and knowledge of the rainforest.
The expedition is considered easy to moderate. Activities include boat travel and guided jungle walks. A basic level of mobility is recommended, but no trekking experience is required.
